Interior designers across the country have discovered that the average age of their clients has shifted way down and that these clients have a penchant for laminate, viewing it as a fresh material with many exciting design possibilities. There was a time when people didn’t seek the advice of interior designers until they were well into their forties, but today’s designers report a growing client base in their twenties and early thirties.

The wealth of TV shows, stylish retail shops and many shelter and do-it-yourself magazines have helped to create design conscious consumers at a much younger age than their parents’ generation. These clients want stylish interiors in their first homes, as opposed to waiting until there are in their dreams home to seek professional design advice.

These young clients are also pushing designers toward a new edge, encouraging them to take a fresh look at stylish, affordable materials, such as laminate. Below, some of the top talents across the country report on this new young market for design services:

Suhail, Suhail Design Studio, Chicago, does design-forward work that naturally attracts a younger crowd. The firm’s clients range from their mid-twenties to late forties and they work to find an original look for less money. “If I think a project is interesting, I will adjust my design ideas because it is the designer’s job to come up with alternate materials,” says Suhail. This can mean substituting laminate for granite, stainless steel or other high-priced luxury countertop materials.

Today, Wilsonart International has a number of collections that enable designers to achieve these upscale looks for considerably less money. These collections include the newly launched Topaz, which replicates engineered stone, and the best-selling MesaGranite and Mystique Collections, which resemble granite and solid surface, respectively.

Marcello Luzi, Weixler, Peterson & Luzi, Philadelphia, has discovered that each generation has a different set of design needs. “Younger clients require more consulting, which I do on an hourly basis,” Luzi says. In these consulting sessions he advises first-time decorating clients on color, lighting and rearranging what they already own. He also works to educate them. “I always ask them how long they plan to be in a house, and if it is just temporary, I steer them away from expensive materials and toward laminate.” In his own condo Luzi used laminate in the kitchen, on the computer stations and wall units. When it came time to sell the condo, Luzi found that buyers liked the laminate. “It helped sell the condo, and I more than made my money back.”
Brian Killian, Brian Killian & Co., Birmingham, Mich., uses laminate on walls and customizes furniture with it. It’s a great surface for walls,” he says. “I use details such as mahogany on the seams. Clients feel it’s a cool thing.” Killian uses laminate insets for furniture that he customizes. He points out that since custom furniture is a big trend today, laminate’s versatility helps him develop unique or signature pieces for clients.
Alan Karlin, Alan Karlin Design, Kansas City, Mo., enjoys laminate’s wide range of colors and patterns in children’s rooms and spa-like bathrooms. He especially uses the wood-grain patterns for kitchen cabinets for clients who want a uniform look when it comes to the color and grain because it’s impossible to guarantee that with natural wood. Says Karlin, “Laminate gives me more control. You always take a chance with natural wood.
